Legal Requirements
- All dogs over 4 months old must be licensed
- Licences are not transferable between dogs
- Each dog needs its own individual licence
- Dogs must also be microchipped (separate requirement)
How to Apply
Online Application (Recommended)
- 1. Visit www.licences.ie
- 2. Select "Dog Licence" from the menu
- 3. Choose annual or lifetime licence
- 4. Complete the application form
- 5. Pay online with debit/credit card
- 6. Licence will be posted to you
Post Office Application (An Post)
You can also apply at any post office. Bring:
- Completed application form
- Payment (cash, card, or postal order)
- Proof of microchipping (if applicable)
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to license your dog can result in:
- • On-the-spot fine of €100
- • Court prosecution with fines up to €2,500
- • Your dog may be seized and impounded
- • Additional costs for pound release fees
Special Considerations
- Guide Dogs: Guide dogs for blind persons, assistance dogs, and Garda dogs are exempt from licensing fees
- Change of Ownership: If you sell or give away your dog, inform the new owner about the licence status
- Moving House: Update your address details on your licence record
- Lost Licence: Contact your local authority for a replacement (small fee may apply)

Reduced fee of £5 for neutered dogs and those microchipped before 1 April 2012
Legal Requirements
- All dogs over 8 weeks old must be licensed
