Dog Buyers Checklist

Is the dog over 8 weeks of age? Puppies cannot leave their mothers before 8 weeks of age.

Ensure the dog is already microchipped (legal requirement) and registered on an approved database. Get the certificate, and transfer ownership to record your contact details.

Obtain a dog license from your local post office or online at licences.ie (€20 annually or €140 lifetime).

Research and register with a local vet clinic before bringing your dog home. Check that your puppy is up-to-date with it's vaccinations and worming programs.

Check fencing is secure (minimum 1.2m high) and gates close properly. Consider cameras for indoors if you are leaving your dog alone for any extended periods of time.

Set up sleeping area, feeding station, and safe outdoor space.

Purchase appropriate-sized bed and washable blankets.

Consider a crate for house training and safe space for your dog. Size it so dog can stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Get non-slip, size-appropriate bowls (stainless steel recommended). Dishwasher safe is preferred.

Buy adjustable collar, 2m lead, and an ID tag with your contact details.

Purchase age-appropriate food and treats (ask breeder/shelter for current diet).

Get brush, nail clippers, dog shampoo, and toothbrush.

Stock up on enzymatic cleaners, paper towels, and disinfectants. Enzymatic cleaners are essential for house training accidents as they break down proteins and eliminate odours that regular cleaners miss, preventing your dog from returning to the same spot.

Buy variety of safe toys for mental stimulation and play.

Find local puppy/dog training classes or qualified trainers.

Research breed-specific needs, temperament, and health issues.

Budget €100-200/month for food, insurance, and routine care.

Set aside €1,000-2,000 for unexpected vet bills.

Ensure you have 2-3 hours daily for walks, play, and care.

Plan your dog care during the school, summer, Christmas, etc. holidays (kennels, pet sitters, or dog-friendly accommodation).

Identify local walking routes and dog parks for daily exercise.

Research local dog walkers or daycare services for when you're at work or away at events.
